Inside Chateau's Recent Completion - Mosman House

Lower North Shore builders, Sydney

This home sits on a gently sloping site with magnificent views over Sydney’s Spit Bridge and Middle Harbour entrance.

The previous 1930’s bungalow was located at the very rear of the property in order to maximize those views. However our client wished to balance the view potential whilst also creating a private and level backyard with a large swimming pool and pool deck.

Moving the new house position to the middle of the site meant the rear yard area became significantly elevated above the ground, however it also meant the water views were maintained. The elevation issue was managed by stepping the pool deck down to a position one metre below the new level rear yard. This also meant that the frameless glass pool fence dropped down too, leaving the view from the living areas unimpeded by pool fencing. The end result is that one corner of the pool is marginally buried into the natural ground level while the diagonally opposite corner is over 2m out of the ground. The level rear lawn is up to 2m above the original natural groundline. This design resolution to the entire site was approved without issue by Mosman Council.

The house itself is a blend of materials that seemed suitable to the contemporary local environment. It incorporates rendered masonry with cedar weatherboards and some panelized and battened cladding. It is an eclectic mix that reflects not only contemporary Mosman architecture but is also suggestive of the earlier federation architecture.

As one would expect the home opens up to the north-east water view with stacking-sliding glass doors. The kitchen, living and alfresco dining spaces wrap around that view and the new lawn area, providing a seamless internal as well as external connection between all of these spaces.

The four large bedrooms are all located upstairs with the master bedroom suite prominent at the water-view end of the house. Stacking sliding doors meeting at the corner of the room slide back to open up the entire corner of the room to the view and the morning sun.

The owners were ecstatic at the end result, not only for their own enjoyment, but also for the inherent value that the design and development have added to the property.
